This site purports to be
a repository of various and assorted factoids back from the "good
old days" of Army aviation flight test at Edwards AFB.
It is, of course, completely unofficial, totally unauthorized, and entirely
disapproved.
But
first ... " Once upon a time " :
Before 1960, the Air Force performed any required flight testing chores
for the Army, using their standard location of Edwards AFB. That year,
the Army hired away many of the exact same (rotary wing) people to establish
its very own flight test organization, also at Edwards, naming it the (U.S.
Army) Aviation Test Office. Years passed...
The name was changed several times, a.k.a. the Aviation Test Activity,
Aviation Systems Test Activity, Aviation Engineering Flight Activity, and
Airworthiness Qualification Test Directorate. In total bewilderment,
the Army finally decreed a tranfer of function to Ft. Rucker, AL, effective
October 1996, resulting in demise of the Army flight test presence at Edwards
AFB. Toti Emul Esto.
